Topographic Position Index (TPI) is a terrain analysis metric used in GIS workflows to quantify the relative elevation of a specific location compared to its surrounding landscape. Calculated by subtracting the mean elevation of a defined neighborhood from the elevation value of a central cell within a digital elevation model (DEM), TPI produces positive values for ridges and elevated landforms, negative values for valleys and depressions, and near-zero values for flat terrain or mid-slope positions.

In spatial analysis pipelines, GIS technology applies TPI through raster-based processing tools available in platforms such as ArcGIS, QGIS, and GRASS GIS, enabling analysts to classify terrain into meaningful landform categories at variable scales.
