General Information

Finland, the "Land of a Thousand Lakes," is famous for its Northern Lights and pristine nature.

Where Finland is Located

Finland is in Northern Europe, bordered by Sweden to the west, Norway to the north, Russia to the east, and the Gulf of Finland (Baltic Sea) to the south. Known as the "Land of a Thousand Lakes," it has vast forests, the Arctic Lapland region, and archipelagos along its southwestern coast.

Landscape of finland

Finland’s terrain is a post-glacial mosaic of over 188,000 lakes and countless islands, particularly in the archipelagos of Åland and Turku. Boreal forests blanket 75% of the land, interspersed with granite ridges and eskers like the UNESCO-listed Salpausselkä. Lapland’s Arctic tundra features fjells (barren plateaus) and the ice-carved fells of Urho Kekkonen National Park. The Saimaa Ringed Seal inhabits labyrinthine lake systems, while the midnight sun illuminates the treeless fells of Lemmenjoki.

Climate of finland

Finland experiences a subarctic climate in the north and a temperate climate in the south. Winters are long and cold, with heavy snowfall in the northern regions, while summers are short and mild, with long daylight hours. The country’s northern location means that winter temperatures can plunge far below freezing, while coastal areas like Helsinki are more moderate.

Natural resources of finland

Timber, iron ore, copper, and hydropower are key resources.
