Where Hungary is Located

Hungary is a landlocked country in Central Europe, bordered by Slovakia to the north, Ukraine and Romania to the east, Serbia and Croatia to the south, Slovenia to the southwest, and Austria to the west. The Danube River flows through its capital, Budapest, and the Great Hungarian Plain dominates its eastern landscape.

Hungary’s Great Hungarian Plain (Alföld) stretches eastward, dotted with alkaline lakes like Lake Tisza and the thermal waters of Lake Hévíz. The Danube River bends through the Visegrád Mountains, creating the Danube Bend’s limestone cliffs. The Bükk Plateau, Hungary’s largest karst region, hides 1,100 caves, while the Tokaj Hills’ volcanic soils produce famed sweet wines. Hortobágy National Park’s “puszta” grasslands host traditional herdsmen and migratory cranes.

Climate of Hungary

Hungary has a continental climate, with hot, dry summers and cold, snowy winters. The summers can reach high temperatures, particularly in the plains, while the winters are cold, with temperatures often falling below freezing. The country experiences moderate rainfall, with the wettest months typically in late spring and early summer. The climate is ideal for growing a variety of crops, including grapes for wine production.
