Italy, a Southern European country, is famous for its art, history, and Mediterranean cuisine.

Where Italy is Located

Italy is in Southern Europe, bordered by France, Switzerland, Austria, and Slovenia to the north, and surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea to the south and east. Its boot-shaped peninsula includes the Alps, Apennine Mountains, and islands like Sicily and Sardinia. Rome, its capital, lies in the central-western region.

Landscape of Italy

Italy’s Apennine Mountains run like a spine, flanked by the Po Valley’s fertile plains and the Dolomites’ jagged limestone peaks. Sicily’s Mount Etna, Europe’s tallest active volcano, spews lava above citrus groves, while the Tuscan countryside rolls with cypress-lined clay hills. The Amalfi Coast’s cliffs plunge into the Tyrrhenian Sea, and Sardinia’s Costa Smeralda dazzles with granite boulders and turquoise coves. The Alpine lakes, like Como and Garda, are glacial relics ringed by olive groves.

Climate of Italy

Italy's climate varies greatly from region to region. The northern areas, such as the Alps, experience a temperate climate with cold, snowy winters and mild summers. The central regions, including Tuscany, have a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. The southern parts and islands, like Sicily and Sardinia, enjoy a more Mediterranean climate, characterized by warm summers and mild winters.
