General Information
Latvia, a Baltic country, is known for its forests, Baltic Sea coastline, and historic Riga.
Where Latvia is Located
Latvia is in Northern Europe (the Baltic region), bordered by Estonia to the north, Russia to the east, Belarus to the southeast, Lithuania to the south, and the Baltic Sea to the west. It features dense forests, over 12,000 rivers, and the Gulf of Riga. The capital, Riga, is a cultural hub on the Baltic coast.
Landscape of latvia
Latvia’s lowland plains, shaped by the Baltic Ice Lake, hold over 12,500 rivers and 3,000 lakes, including the sprawling Rāzna Lake. The Gauja River Valley’s Devonian sandstone cliffs contrast with the Curonian Spit’s migrating dunes (shared with Lithuania). Kemeri National Park protects sulfur spring marshes, while the Ķemeri Bog’s boardwalks traverse spongy peatlands. Over 54% of Latvia is forested, primarily pine and spruce, with old-growth stands in Slītere National Park.
Climate of latvia
Latvia has a temperate maritime climate, influenced by the Baltic Sea. Winters are cold, with snow common from December to February, while summers are mild and pleasant, with temperatures averaging around 20°C (68°F). Rainfall is spread evenly throughout the year, and the country experiences long daylight hours in the summer and long, dark winters, especially in the northern regions.
Natural resources of latvia
Peat, timber, and fertile land are key resources.
