Paraguay, a landlocked South American country, is known for its Guarani culture and wetlands.

Where Paraguay is Located

Paraguay is a landlocked country in South America, bordered by Bolivia to the north, Brazil to the east and northeast, and Argentina to the south and west. It is divided by the Paraguay River into the arid Gran Chaco region to the west and the fertile Paraná Plateau to the east. The capital, Asunción, lies on the Paraguay River.

Landscape of Paraguay

Paraguay’s landscape splits between the arid Gran Chaco’s thorny forests (60% of the country) and the Paraná Plateau’s Atlantic rainforest remnants. The Paraguay River bisects the country, creating wetlands like the Pantanal’s northern edge, rich with caimans and capybaras. The Itaipú Dam reservoir, one of the world’s largest, floods the Paraná River’s basalt canyons. The Ybycuí National Park’s waterfalls cascade over Precambrian rock, while the Cerrado savannas in the east transition to red sandstone cliffs.

Climate of Paraguay

Paraguay has a subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and mild winters. The summer months, from December to March, can be very hot, with temperatures often exceeding 35°C (95°F), while the winters, from June to September, are mild, with temperatures ranging from 15°C to 25°C (59°F to 77°F). The country experiences a rainy season from October to March, and the humidity can be high year-round.
