Spain, famous for its Mediterranean beaches, flamenco, and historic cities like Barcelona, is a top travel destination.

Where Spain is Located

Spain is in Southwestern Europe, occupying most of the Iberian Peninsula. It is bordered by Portugal to the west, France and Andorra to the northeast, and the Mediterranean Sea to the east and south. The Atlantic Ocean lies to the northwest, and it includes the Canary Islands (Africa) and Balearic Islands (Mediterranean). Madrid, its capital, is centrally located.

Landscape of Spain

Spain’s diverse topography includes the Pyrenees’ limestone peaks (Aneto, 3,404m), the volcanic Canary Islands (Teide, 3,718m, UNESCO), and the semi-arid Tabernas Desert. Andalusia’s Sierra Nevada hosts Europe’s southernmost ski slopes, while the Ebro Delta’s rice paddies attract flamingos. The Camino de Santiago traverses Galicia’s misty fraga forests, and La Mancha’s vast plains contrast with the Basque Country’s green montes.

Climate of Spain

Spain's climate is highly diverse, ranging from a Mediterranean climate along the coast with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters, to a continental climate in the interior with more extreme temperature variations. The Canary Islands have a subtropical climate, while the northern regions, like the Basque Country, experience cooler temperatures and more rainfall throughout the year. The southern regions, like Andalusia, have hot, dry summers and mild winters.
