Where Portugal is Located

Portugal is in Southwestern Europe, bordered by Spain to the east and north, and the Atlantic Ocean to the west and south. It includes the Azores and Madeira archipelagos in the Atlantic. Known for its coastal cliffs, Douro River Valley, and cities like Lisbon and Porto. The Algarve region in the south is a popular tourist destination.

Landscape of Portugal

Portugal’s terrain ranges from the Douro Valley’s terraced vineyards (UNESCO) to the Algarve’s limestone cliffs and golden beaches. The Azores archipelago rises volcanically, with Pico Mountain (2,351m) looming over vineyards planted in black basalt. Madeira’s Laurisilva cloud forests (UNESCO) cling to rugged peaks, while the Alentejo’s cork oak savannas transition to granite outcrops in Serra da Estrela, home to Iberian wolves and glacial lakes.

Climate of Portugal

Portugal has a Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. The coastal regions experience moderate temperatures year-round, with the summer months seeing temperatures often above 30°C (86°F), while the winter temperatures rarely fall below 10°C (50°F). The inland areas can experience greater temperature extremes, especially during summer, while the Algarve region in the south enjoys a more temperate climate.
